May The client is currently reviewing the detailed feasibility study report. The next phase, comprising detailed design studies is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2003, pending approval from the ministry. Tenders for the first dredging and construction packages are due to be issued in the fourth quarter of 2003 - 30th
May Plans for the development of this port are expanding, with the scope now including an airport, a township and leisure facilities. The project also received a boost after South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering expressed interest in operating a ship repair yard at the port, which might later be expanded to include a shipbuilding capability. The initial feasibility study encompassed construction of a commercial port and dry dock at a cost of $256 million. The plan includes a post-graving dock able to handle ultra-large crude carriers (ULCCs) up to 400,000 dwt and a ship repair yard along with two breakwaters with a length of some 4 kilometres. However, the expanded scope, which is likely to cost almost double the original estimate, also envisages an airport capable of handling Hercules C-130 aircraft and a township able to accommodate 70,000 residents. Netherlands' Royal Haskoning and Lebanon's Khatib & Alami are drawing up detailed designs on this scheme. Work is scheduled to take nine months to complete. - 30th
May South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering has signed a letter of intent to invest in a shipyard, as part of this scheme, in addition to designing and operating the facility.
